How to Create a Focal Point in Your Garden

Sometimes, a garden needs a focal point — a special place that catches the eye, draws you in, and gives the whole outdoor space a sense of purpose.
But creating a focal point doesn’t mean you need an expensive sculpture or something large and dramatic. Often, the most successful focal points are much simpler.

A beautiful piece of garden architecture, an old bench, a gate, a pot, a tree, or an object you already have can become the star of the space. The secret is giving it a dedicated place — somewhere important where it can be noticed, appreciated, and enjoyed.

Be creative. Look at what you already have and ask yourself: What is the story behind this object? Why do I want to keep it? What memories does it hold?
This is something I always try to understand when designing a garden. I listen to the stories behind the things my clients want to keep, and then I design around them — creating the right setting, perspective, planting, and space so that their beauty can be seen again.

Sometimes, the best focal point is not something new at all.
It is something you already love, waiting to be seen in a new way.
Give it the space it deserves, and let its glory shine again.
