Syringa vulgaris ‘Madame Lemoine’ is a classic French lilac cultivar prized for its elegant, double white blooms.

Flowering in late spring  end of April beginning of May, it produces dense, conical clusters of highly fragrant blossoms that stand out against its heart-shaped green leaves.

This deciduous shrub  grows around  3–4 meters tall, making it ideal for borders, hedges, or as a specimen plant.

It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and is valued for both its ornamental beauty and its strong, sweet scent.

• Light: Full sun is essential for strong flowering (at least 5-6 hours daily).

• Watering: Keep soil moderately moist when young; once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogged soil.

• Soil: Prefers well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Adding compost annually definitely will reward you with lots of flowers.

• Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering (late spring).
Only remove spent blooms and cut back up to one-third of old stems to encourage new growth and maintain required shape. And remember  winter pruning is not advisable , as it removes next year’s buds.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds as this  reduce flowering.

• Mulching: Add a mulch layer in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the stem base.

• Pests & Diseases: Watch for powdery mildew, aphids, and scale. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

• Rejuvenation: Older shrubs can be rejuvenated by hard pruning over 2–3 years, removing the oldest stems at the base.
